» An Interview with skc - 1/21/02.

» How long have you been producing?
I've been producing for more than two years, using decent software for a year.
» Do you have any classical music training?
I taught myself to read the score / play the piano and the guitar a bit but I've never taken any lessons. Listening to classical music / jazz is something I strongly reccomend to anyone who wants to boost his / her creativity - a couple of minutes of quality classical music or jazz can be more inspiring than 99% of any dancemusic. The transition from classical to dancefloor music can be hard though, it took me years before I learnt how to appreciate dnb that first seemed repetitive noise to me, but I'm really glad than now I'm able to enjoy both.
» How were you first introduced to Drum and Bass?
A friend of mine let me listen to Goldie's Timeless LP and about a year later I went to a party where Ed Rush dropped the most stunning 3-hour set I've ever heard. I decided to start producing and I've been obsessed with writing tunes ever since.
» How would you describe your musical style?
What I'm always trying to do is to create a crisp, dynamic sound, so I rarely use lofi samples. That more or less defines my approach - I prefer to make my own synthetized sounds / samples rather than using loops and stuff from sample-cds, so going for the more clinical, technoid sound is more a result of that, I've never been a fan of techno.
» What's the scene like in Budapest?
Lots of great parties, big names from the UK every other weekend, not too many djs but those few who are good are really good. Only a handful of local producers got as far as having their stuff released, but I'm certain you'll hear a lot more about our country in a couple of years time - we've got our own message-board where people from around the country put up their tunes so that others can comment on them, it's a nice little community of aspiring producers, some of them with lots of talent.
» What do you think about the current state of Drum and Bass?
I liked it a bit more when the techno vibe and the oldschool revival sound emerged some years ago, some of these subgenres seem to be stuck in a rut to some extent, but then again with artists like Kemal & Rob Data, Klute, Universal Project, Total Science, Invaderz trying to take their stuff to the next level there's hope that things will keep moving forward as they'd always been. There are many talented up-and-coming producers as well but whether or not they'll be able to invent something new remains to be seen - I'm perfectly aware of the fact that sooner or later I need to make something new myself, if I want to make my mark on the scene I mean. I don't want to force it of course, I do whatever I feel like, but I hope I'll be able to come up with something really original soon.
» If you could work with any artist, who would it be and why?
It seems to me that it's best to work with producers you know personally, so if I'll ever have a chance to meet the guys I've been in touch with, I'm sure we'll be able to write a tune or two together. I don't fantasize about ever working with any of the most established producers.
» What do you want to be doing in 10 years?
Whatever I'll be doing it's going to have something to do with music, that's for sure. I'm planning to start djing this year, playing out the tunes by some of the guys I'm in touch with and my own tunes would be fun so if that works out and my releases do well who knows? I may be doing the same in ten years, if writing tunes keeps giving me so much pleasure than I'm sure I will.
